The success of a placement of an ICAN assistance dog begins with the selection of the best suited pup for the job. Because so much is asked of an assistance dog , steady temperament, calmness and confidence, problem solving skills, great health, ICAN relies on the generosity of breeders to help us find theses special pups.
ICAN trains mostly labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, Doodles, and smooth coated collies. We look for breeders whos pups pass many health and temperament screens. Ideally we ask for health clearances on the parent dogs ( hips, eyes, heart) and an opportunity to assess the temperament of the parent dogs and any past litters. Once the health and temperament screens are completed ICAN works with breeders to facilitate the donation and entry into training.
ICAN provides updates to the breeders and invites breeders to come and see the program in action. As ICAN anticipates placing 10-15 pups a year we are continually in need of quality pups entering the program.
If you are a breeder and interested in learning more about supporting ICAN, please email us to find out more information.
